What Inspired Us To Start in Our 60s

In the age of social media and digital platforms, it’s never too late to start something new, creative, and meaningful. That’s exactly what we, Croce and Carol, decided to do when we launched our YouTube channel, Sicilian Life, in our 60s.

What began as a way to document our experiences living in Sicily for family and friends quickly turned into something bigger. It’s now a way to connect with people around the world who are curious about life in Sicily and Italian culture.

In this blog post, we’re sharing why we chose to start this journey, what the channel is all about, and how it’s helped us grow in ways we never expected.

YouTube Is for Everyone

YouTube has changed a lot since 2005. It’s now one of the biggest platforms for sharing video content and connecting with people. From tutorials to travel vlogs, the platform is open to anyone with a story to tell, no matter their age.

When we reached our 60s, we realized it was the perfect time to share our story, especially about something we love, life in Sicily.

Starting a YouTube channel is a creative outlet and a way to build a community. You don’t have to be tech-savvy, just willing to be yourself and talk about what matters to you.

For us, it’s a way to connect with others who love Italy, Sicily, and the kind of real life that doesn’t always show up in guidebooks.

Who We Are

Sicilian Life is the story of our life together as an Italian-American couple living in Sicily. Croce was born and raised here. Carol moved from the United States. Together, we share two perspectives that give our content a balance of local insight and fresh discovery.

We began sharing just for family and friends, but the channel grew. People from all over started tuning in to learn about the language, food, culture, and lifestyle here.

Our content grew alongside us. As we learned how to navigate the move, the challenges, and the culture, we realized it could help others thinking about a similar leap. Whether you’re dreaming of moving or just curious about daily life here, our story might help you see it more clearly.

Why Start in Our 60s?

A lot of people think launching something like a YouTube channel is for the younger crowd. We don’t. If anything, we had more life experience, more stories, and more clarity than we did in our younger years.

When we started Sicilian Life, we had already lived a lot, and we wanted to pass along what we’d learned. That includes both the highs and lows of making a big move, and what it’s really like to live in Sicily day to day.

We also wanted to show that it’s never too late to start. There’s no age limit on trying something new or connecting with others through your story.

What You’ll Find on Our Channel

Our videos cover everything from daily life in Sicily to practical advice for travelers or future expats. We aim to give a full picture, beautiful views, and honest insights.

  • Sicilian food: Recipes, cooking tips, and favorite local spots
  • Language: Simple phrases and dialect tips to help you connect
  • Culture: Local festivals, traditions, and how life flows here
  • Travel: Hidden gems and spots you won’t find in guidebooks
  • Real-life advice: From cost of living to cultural adjustments

We update our blog regularly, too. Check out our latest posts if you’re interested in reading more about life here.

What We’ve Learned

Moving to Sicily and starting this channel came with a lot of lessons. Things here move slower. Paperwork takes time. There are challenges, for sure. But the beauty of it is that the slow pace teaches patience and helps you appreciate simple things.

We’ve learned to let go of expectations and take things one step at a time. That’s something we try to pass on in every video and every post.

It’s not always picture-perfect, but that’s exactly what makes it real and worth sharing.

Why Join Us?

If you’re curious about Italy or Sicily, or even just looking for something new to follow that feels honest and grounded, we’d love to have you along for the ride.

This project has become more than a hobby. It’s become a community. We hope it encourages others to start their own thing, whatever that may be, no matter where they are in life.

And if you ever do end up in Sicily, don’t be surprised if we offer to meet up for a coffee.
